The Nexus Institute is co-organizing the 2020-2021 Environmental Justice Film Series with the Purdue Center for the Environment (C4E). The films in this series focus on the native communities in the South American Andes, the environmental injustices they face and the resilience they demonstrate as an inspiration for the world. The series include: Hija de la Laguna (Daughter of the Lake), Y Tambien la Lluvia (Even the rain), Return to the Andes, and Sembradoras de Vida (Mothers of the Land).  

 Hija de la Laguna is a 2015 documentary directed by Ernesto (Tito) Cabellos and covers Newmont Mining Co. Yanacocha mining project, currently the largest mining operation in Peru, and its encroaching presence on local people’s lands and their rights to access and manage their natural resources. Maxima Acuña, the protagonist in the film, was awarded the 2016 Goldman Environmental Prize. 

Hija de la Laguna will be screened on Thursday, October 28 6-8 p.m. via Zoom and, thanks to Willie Cruz from the Division of Student Life, will also include an outdoor social distanced watch party with an inflatable screen on the Intramural Fields (across Hillenbrand Residence Hall). Director Cabellos, who currently teaches at the University of Sussex, UK will connect via zoom for a Q&A after the viewing.
