Teaching & Learning

At Purdue you’ll find rigorous and rewarding academic programs. But teaching and learning doesn’t happen only in the classrooms. Internships, study abroad, undergraduate research and other opportunities all contribute to a positive and successful student experience. Most important of all, everyone here is focused on a common goal: student success.

Meet the Senior Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning

[Intro music] Hi, I’m Frank Dooley, Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning. I’m responsible for 16 different programs found in four offices, whose supports the academic side, that is the teaching and learning, of Purdue University. Most of the campus only knows parts of our offices, and typically as acronyms, whether it be CIE, BGR, CCO, IMPACT, or DRC. On this video, I want to quickly introduce you to the overall mission of Teaching and Learning.

In my role, I act as the guardian of the curriculum, this means I balance two competing demands. On the one hand, it is critical that we maintain the integrity of the Purdue degree. In other words, we continually ask ourselves the question: “What does it mean to have a Purdue education?” To this end, we design and deliver faculty development programs that promote active learning. Student-centered active learning is effective in increasing student engagement and it leads to real learning gains.

On the other hand, it is also important to assure that the Purdue degree is attainable. To that end, we aim to help more students graduate with a Purdue degree. This might mean the support we provide for students in programs like Purdue Promise, the training we give to our advisors, or through our work with the faculty in colleges in our 20-plus plans of study. Our work also touches other areas like career planning, online learning, and Think Summer. But student success is at the heart of everything we do. We know that learning, growth, and leadership skill are achieved at every point of the Purdue experience. So we need to make sure that we’re looking beyond the classroom.

My staff works closely with the colleges, as well as with enrollment management and student life teams to make sure that we’re taking care of the whole student as we prepare them for life beyond college.

I hope you’ll take some time to explore our Teaching and Learning website. We have a host of programs designed to help Purdue’s faculty, staff, and students become the best boilermakers they can be. Thanks for watching. [Music]
