Appointments, honors and activities

Appointments and promotions:

- Thomas Templin, professor of health and kinesiology, has been named interim head of the Department of Consumer Science effective Tuesday (Jan. 22). The appointment was made by Christine Ladisch, dean of the College of Health and Human Sciences. Templin came to Purdue in 1977 as an assistant professor in physical education. He became a full professor in 1992. Throughout his tenure at the unviersity, Templin has been engaged in both undergraduate and graduate education as a teacher and adviser. His research focus is the study of the lives and careers of teachers. He was the recipient of the 2012 Scholar Award from the Special Interest Group on Learning and Instruction in Physical Education with the American Educational Research Association. Templin is a fellow in the National Academy of Kinesiology. He has bachelor's and master's degrees from Indiana University and a doctorate from the University of Michigan. Templin replaces Sugato Chakravarty, who will return to full-time teaching and research. A search for a permanent department head will begin later this year.

 

Faculty and staff honors:

- Purdue biochemistry professor Elizabeth Tran's article on the role of an RNA (ribonucleic acid) enzyme on normal cell growth and gene expression has been selected as one of the 22 best papers published by the Journal of Biological Chemistry in 2012. Tran's paper, "The DEAD-box RNA Helicase Dbp2 Connects RNA Quality Control with Repression of Aberrant Transcription," was published in the journal's July 2012 issue and was selected to represent all papers on RNA published in 2012.
