SupportLinc’s April feature is ‘Living in the Moment to Reduce Stress'; additional resources available
Each month, SupportLinc, provider of behavioral health care for employees on the West Lafayette campus, offers a featured topic on its web portal. April’s feature is “Living in the Moment to Reduce Stress.”
Living in the now to reduce anxiety is a popular topic and is specifically addressed in the New York Times bestseller, “The Power of Now,” by Eckhart Tolle. Tolle’s teachings are outlined on Just Mind’s website page, “Minimize Anxiety & Depression by Living in the Now.” The main theory suggests that by reminiscing in the past, individuals often are reminded of pain, depression, guilt and more, and thinking about the future can cause anxiety and worry. What’s left then? Living in the now and focusing on whether there is a problem right now, which Tolle argues more times than not the answer will be “no.”
Meditation and mindfulness practices can be used to help individuals focus on the now, and there are University resources to help.
- The Healthy Boiler Portal offers five- to 10-minute meditation segments under the University link at the top of the page.
- SupportLinc also provides resources, including:
- Taking a Moment for Mindfulness – article
- Mindfulness for Stress Relief – article
- Mindfulness Matters – article
- Mindfulness for Managing Stress – tip sheet
- Meditation Coaching
- Meditation Toolkit
- Visualization Meditation for Stress Relief
