Healthy Boiler workshop to focus on stretching to benefit your body, mind

Many employees notice stiffness in their muscles from sitting for extended periods of time; however, there are exercises individuals can do at their desk to help relieve back pain, increase energy levels and improve posture and circulation. To learn more, join Lindsay Bloom, health coach at Purdue Fort Wayne, from noon to 1 p.m. May 4 via WebEx for a Healthy Boiler workshop titled “Stretch at Your Desk.”

The workshop supports the Healthy Boiler Program's physical health pillar along with the behavioral health pillar, as stretching causes a release of endorphins, which trigger positive feelings.

“Stretching has many benefits,” Bloom says. “Stretching during the day can help improve posture and combat muscle tightness associated with sitting at a desk all day. Additionally, anxiety, stress and fatigue can cause negative effects on your body, both mentally and physically, and stretching can help by releasing those feel-good hormones, increasing blood flow and circulation to your muscles and brain and much more.”

Those interested should register by May 3 via the Healthy Boiler Portal. The registration link can be found under the “Engage” tab, “Wellness Events” on the portal’s homepage. Healthy Boiler workshops are free to all benefits-eligible faculty and staff and dependents covered on a Purdue medical plan.
