Once again, the Purdue Jazz Festival will jump-start the spring semester with concerts, clinics and competitions. The festival, from Purdue Bands & Orchestras, will occur Jan. 16-18. It is headlined by jazz supergroup Artemis (shown), presented Friday (Jan. 17) by Purdue Convocations. The opening of the semester also brings the opening of three exhibitions on campus. JANUARY 13
The exhibition “Creative Muses: Art + Fashion” (Jan. 13-Feb. 15) opens in the Robert L. Ringel Gallery in Stewart Center. Art and fashion intertwine as culture, social change, and new techniques and materials influence both, so what is art? Featuring items from Purdue Department of Theatre and Purdue Galleries’ collection. STEW, Robert L. Ringel Gallery. Hours: 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Saturday (except holidays). The exhibition “Into a Study [Among the Gods]” - Paul X. Rutz and Amanda Hampton Wray (Jan. 13-31) opens the semester at the Patti and Rusty Rueff Galleries in Pao Hall. The exhibition “Impressions: The Life, Works, and Legacy of Bruce Rogers” (Jan. 13-June 24) opens in the Archives and Special Collections library. Rogers was a Purdue alumnus and internationally acclaimed typeface creator and book designer. Hours: 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. The 30th annual Purdue Jazz Festival will warm up winter with a three-day variety of events plus Saturday clinics. First up is the Community Jazz Showcaze Concert featuring artist-in-residence Mark Buselli, trumpet, with high school jazz bands and Purdue Jazz Band. 7:30-9 p.m. Long Center, 111 N. JANUARY 17
Artemis, a supergroup of six jazz giants who lead their own groups, will light a fire under the 30th Purdue Jazz Festival in Purdue Convocations’ contribution to the multi-day event. 8 p.m. STEW, Loeb Playhouse. JANUARY 18
Two free public concerts will cap the 30th Purdue Jazz Festival on a day with clinics around campus. 1) Noon Concert in STEW, Loeb Playhouse, featuring artist-in-residence Mark Buselli, trumpet. 2) Finale Concert at 7 p.m. in Elliott Hall of Music, featuring guest artists Tia Fuller and Aubrey Logan.
