New medical benefit launched Feb. 20 to provide enhanced coverage for certain procedures

Benefits-eligible Purdue employees and spouses who are covered by a Purdue health plan now have access to the Carrum Health Benefit, a special surgery and medical benefit that provides enhanced coverage for certain planned procedures at participating Centers of Excellence.

Through the Carrum Health Benefit, participants have access to specialized providers and facilities selected for their expertise in certain high-risk or high-cost procedures. The new benefit supports the physical health and financial wellness pillars of the Healthy Boiler Program.

The Carrum Health Benefit may be used for the following procedures:

  • Spinal fusion surgery
  • Bariatric (weight loss) surgery
  • Other orthopedic and spine procedures (e.g., hand, wrist, elbow, shoulder, ankle, foot)
    • Excludes total hip and knee replacements. See the Total Hip & Knee webpage for information on these procedures.
  • Cardiac (heart) surgery
  • Oncology
    Carrum’s cancer program includes:
    • Virtual guidance and ongoing support for all cancer diagnoses
    • Comprehensive treatment for breast and thyroid cancer*
    • Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR-T) cell therapy*

*Restrictions may apply

Individuals enrolled in any of the CDHP Purdue medical plans must first meet their full deductible and coinsurance. Individuals enrolled in the J1 PPO plan must first meet their full deductible and coinsurance. After deductible and coinsurance are met, the Carrum Health Benefit covers 100%.

The Carrum Health Benefit covers travel and lodging expenses. In addition, participants who utilize the Carrum Health Benefit will receive a $500 incentive paid via PayPal or a prepaid Mastercard from Carrum Health after the procedure. Per IRS rules, a portion of any covered travel expenses will be reported as taxable income.

Eligibility

Benefits-eligible faculty and staff and dependents covered on a Purdue health plan who are interested in utilizing the benefit can register at carrum.me/purdue. They will be contacted in approximately two weeks. The Carrum Health app also is available to download on both iPhone and Android devices and can be used to search for and compare participating hospitals and physicians.
