Chair’s Corner – August 2018

Brittany ValeIt’s the season of new beginnings – new students, new classes, new buildings and new roads. It’s so easy to get swept up in all the chaos that is happening around campus this month.

It seems as if every road we take to get here on campus has construction or is closed due to the remodel project. Instead of being frustrated and focusing on your immediate delay in travel (and yes, it’s only going to get worse with all the new students back on campus), think about what this means for our university: we are growing; we are improving. We have the opportunity to take Purdue to the next level.

August also brings new minds to our university. Purdue received more than 52,100 undergraduate applications – 12,000 more than what we did in 2014. Approximately 29,000 applications came from nonresidents, about 10,900 came from in-state residents, and about 12,200 came from international applicants. (Exact numbers will be available next month.) With so many fresh minds coming to campus, we should all be excited for the future of these Boilermakers.

Another new happening at Purdue University is the ramp-up of the job classification structure roll-out. The job classification structure is a project you may have heard about that is running in conjunction of the human capital management project. The job classification project will establish a strong organization for job classifications, competencies, and most importantly provide all Purdue employees with a clear career path. This initiative will affect all Purdue employees for the better. Once implemented, this structure will provide you with objectives to meet if you’re interested in advancing your career with Purdue University. APSAC will be facilitating town hall meetings this fall to share more information about this project and the benefits. Stay tuned for more details.

The campus is buzzing. Students are unpacking and the sounds of construction can be heard in the background. It’s an exciting time to be a Purdue University employee.
