Green Belt LSS CertificationLean Six Sigma (LSS) is an industry-defining methodology that combines the best of Six Sigma concepts and Lean ideology to improve products, services and customer satisfaction. Both are effective, data-driven strategies proven by decades of use and analysis, and both emphasize the importance of the consumer, recognizing that it is the buyer and not the business who ultimately decides the value of a product or service.

Businesses that utilize LSS tools can:

  • Cut production costs
  • Decrease production speed
  • Reduce spending
  • Minimize variability on parts
  • Improve quality
  • Maintain a competitive edge

A Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification program introduces professionals to the tools, techniques and methodologies used to streamline production and services from end to end. Students learn how to apply Lean principles that reduce multiple types of waste (such as defects, overproduction and non-utilized talent) with the Six Sigma-rooted Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control (DMAIC) process.

A LSS Green Belt certification* signifies a mastery of basic LSS principles and an ability to lead Green Belt-level projects. Graduates can go on to direct such projects within their organizations or continue their education with LSS Black Belt certification.

The Path to Becoming Green Belt Certified at Purdue

Purdue University’s online Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certificate program is a 10-week, instructor-led course. Outside of weekly scheduled assignments and quizzes, students may review lectures and complete coursework according to their own schedule. The program consists of approximately 25 hours of video lectures and 20 hours of coursework, and students should expect to commit to four or five hours of study per week.

Purdue offers alternative certificate options for professionals who cannot commit to the full Green Belt course, already have an understanding of LSS principles, or have taken an LSS Green Belt course from an institution other than Purdue:

  • Lean Principles certificate: A basic course where students can choose from three industry-specific pathways (healthcare/service, general business/IT, and manufacturing production) and leave with a personalized toolkit for bringing Lean to their organizations.
  • Green Belt Refresher certificate: A foundational course designed for students who have completed Green Belt certification elsewhere and want to earn LSS Black Belt certification from Purdue.

Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Certification Requirements

Purdue’s online LSS Green Belt program was designed for professionals with little to no prior Lean or Six Sigma knowledge. There are no requirements to enroll, and successful completion of this program or the Green Belt refresher course can fulfill a requirement for higher-level studies, such as Purdue’s LSS Black Belt certificate.

Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Certification Curriculum

Purdue LSS Green Belt students learn by analyzing case studies rather than completing a Green Belt project. This method allows for greater flexibility in learning and a more holistic understanding of the tools used. In addition, Purdue LSS Green Belt certificate graduates have the option of earning 4.5 continuing education units (CEUs) on their transcript at no additional cost.

Students who plan to progress to LSS Black Belt certification are encouraged to begin thinking about their Black Belt-level project as they progress through their LSS Green Belt certification or refresher courses. At Purdue, Black Belt students begin their project at the start of the course. For this reason, a solid foundation of Green Belt-level LSS concepts is essential for success in the Black Belt program.

Learning Objectives

Students can graduate from an LSS Green Belt certificate program with the knowledge and analytical skills to:

  • Relate LSS concepts to business objectives, and employ LSS skills in process improvement projects
  • Define and utilize the DMAIC process, and effectively use tools and concepts at each phase
  • Identify waste
  • Collect and process customer viewpoints
  • Define metrics for measuring success
  • Analyze and present data to teams and company leadership

Per data from the job market analysis platform Labor Insight by Burning Glass, the median salary for professionals with either LSS or Six Sigma Green Belt certification is $80,709.
