Common Lexicon: New Resource Available for Data Users

The Quality Data Experience Committee is pleased to introduce the Common Lexicon, a new terminology resource available in Data Cookbook. The Common Lexicon aims to standardize terminology across data areas within the university, enhancing clarity and communication for all data users.
According to Andrea Pluckebaum, Quality Data Experience Committee Co-Chair and IDA+A Director, Analytics, the idea for the Common Lexicon originated from a brainstorming session where gaps in terminology were identified across different functional areas such as finance, human resources, and student services. Different departments often used varied terms for the same concepts which led to confusion and inefficiencies, highlighting the need for a unified lexicon.
The Common Lexicon is designed for anyone on campus who uses data semi-regularly. It categorizes content types, specifies deliverable categories, and details types of data and reports/dashboards. “Users can use the lexicon to do a knowledge check to see the types of words that Purdue uses to describe our data environment to ensure they understand the data landscape,” said Pluckebaum. For example, both frozen and snapshot data are defined in the lexicon, helping users understand the subtlety between these similar yet different types of data.
“The completion of the Common Lexicon is a measurable step towards improving data literacy and communication within Purdue,” said Molly Amstutz, IDA+A Senior Director and Chief Data Officer. “The lexicon provides a clear and consistent set of terms, helping to bridge gaps between different functional areas and fostering a more cohesive data environment.”
The Common Lexicon is accessible via Data Cookbook and available to the Purdue community via their Purdue Login. The Quality Data Experience is one of four Purdue University Data Governance Committees reporting to the Executive Data Council. The Data Governance Committees work to promote responsible use of data, effective communication, and data transparency for the campus community.
