OrthoIndy, Carrum Health and Purdue University Partnership Delivers Life-Changing Orthopedic Results
The following patient testimonial is a result of the collaborative partnership between Purdue University and OrthoIndy, established to provide exceptional orthopedic care to employees (and dependents over age 18 covered on a Purdue medical plan) across the state of Indiana.
At 71, OrthoIndy hip patient Pat Harvey, who is an admissions processor in Admissions at Purdue University, proudly maintains a full and active lifestyle.
She works full-time in Purdue University’s admissions office, volunteers at her local church, and enjoys gardening, biking and spending time with her ten grandchildren. So, when pain in her left hip began to interfere with her daily routine, Pat knew it was time to make a change.
In Summer 2024, routine bloodwork revealed signs of rheumatoid arthritis, likely affecting Pat’s hip. She consulted several orthopedic specialists who confirmed that she would eventually need a hip replacement. As her pain continued to worsen, Pat realized it was time to seriously consider her options. She turned to OrthoIndy thanks to a unique health insurance benefit through Purdue University.
Getting Results, Fast
Pat scheduled an appointment with OrthoIndy total joint replacement surgeon Dr. Michael Cross, and immediately felt at ease after meeting him.
Pat’s biggest concern was choosing between an anterior (from the front) or posterior (from the back) hip replacement. She wanted to remain active without long-term limitations. Dr. Cross took the time to explain both approaches and reassured her that his posterior technique would allow full mobility after surgery.
“I was nervous about surgery at first, but I trusted Dr. Cross and felt good about the way he explained everything,” said Pat. “He’s just a very happy, approachable doctor who takes time with his patients.”
A Transformative Hip Replacement
Pat underwent hip replacement surgery in September 2024. Although the first week of recovery demanded patience as her body adjusted, her overall experience was very positive.
“One of the best parts was being able to do rehab exercises from home, which made the recovery process a lot more manageable,” said Pat.
With a local OrthoIndy office in Lafayette, her follow-up appointments were convenient and most were close to home.
Moving Forward Without Pain
Today, Pat feels great. She’s back to doing all the things she enjoys, from working in her garden and biking to spending time with her grandchildren. She even tried pickleball with friends for the first time after surgery.
“My experience with OrthoIndy was wonderful,” said Pat. “Dr. Cross was so patient with me as I asked questions and weighed my options. I’ve already recommended him to a friend who needs a hip replacement, and I’d recommend him to anyone.”
Overall, Pat appreciated how seamless the entire process felt, from scheduling to post-surgery support. Knowing she was in capable hands gave her the confidence to move forward without hesitation.
“Dr. Cross and the team at OrthoIndy did an outstanding job with my surgery. Because of their care, I truly feel like I have my life back,” said Pat.
