Biowall: a Botanical Air Filter

  • The Biowall is a botanical air filter that leverages the natural ability of plants to purify indoor air by reducing CO2 and removing VOCs. It also has the potential to reduce HVAC energy consumption by up to 25% because less outside air is required for ventilation. This allows the Biowall to recycle the indoor air and create a productive and inspiring environment.

Background

  1. Indoor Air Quality: Air tight buildings are more energy efficient, but also trap a mix of airborne contaminants that results in complaints of poor indoor air quality.

  1. NASA Research: NASA scientist Dr. Bill Wolverton began to study the cleansing powers of indoor plants to recycle indoor air in airtight space capsules for deep space flight.

How it Works

  • The contaminated air from the buildings flows through the plants in the Biowall. As air flows through the growth media, microbes in the root zone of the plants metabolize VOCs. After the filtration, the cleaned air returns back to the HVAC system of the house.
