Construction on new terraces to impact sidewalks, traffic south of Purdue Memorial Union

Updated May 27, 2021 to reflect an additional sidewalk closure

As part of the ongoing renovation of the ground floor of the Purdue Memorial Union (PMU), construction of two new outdoor terraces began May 17.

As a result, most sidewalks south of PMU and the shared-use path immediately north of State Street in the area are closed.

An additional sidewalk located between PMU and Stewart Center (STEW), just south of the southwest entrance to PMU will also close on June 1. It will close off the corridor between PMU and STEW at the south corners of the buildings as shown on the map below. This specific closure is expected to last through early July.

In addition, occasional lane restrictions along the adjacent section of westbound State Street are in place as truck traffic accesses the construction site. Flaggers are directing traffic as needed.

All motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians should exercise caution in the area, obey posted signs and flaggers, and follow detours or seek alternate routes.

Access to the main and second floors of PMU are being maintained from the west entrances. These entrances are not accessible from the south due to the construction fence. ADA access is available from PMU’s northwest entrance or by using the elevator connected to the subwalk in the Grant Street Parking Garage. The south entrance facing State Street will be an emergency exit only while work continues. Access to the east entrance of STEW will also maintained.

The majority of these impacts are expected to continue through October.
