International Scholar Services

The International Scholar Services team supports international faculty, staff, postdocs and scholars holding visa status where the primary activity is employment or research: H-1B, e-3, TN, O-1, J-1 Research Scholar, J-1 Short-Term Scholar, or J-1 Visiting Undergraduate Student.

The International Scholar Services team does not support enrolled international students: enrolled international students must contact the International Student Services team.

  • Scholar counselors are available Monday afternoons from 2 pm - 4 pm; and Tuesday to Friday from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm (except University Holidays). Calls are not answered during the lunch hour (12 noon to 1 pm).

Separate Student and Scholar Team Services

Instructions for additional services are below in "Student Services" and "Scholar Services" sections. Our office has one team that assist students and another that assist scholars. We have tried above and below to define what is a student and what is a scholar. Please refer to the section according to your classification.

If you are still unsure whether you are classified as either a student or a scholar in our office, please call our general phone line (765-494-5770) or email iss@purdue.edu. We can then let you know your classification and refer you to the appropriate team.

Once you know your classification, you can refer to the appropriate section below regarding how to obtain additional services.

Student Services

In this section is listed services our student team provides to international students admitted to a Purdue University degree program. International faculty, staff, postdocs and scholars holding visa status where the primary activity is employment or research (such as H-1B, e-3, TN, O-1, J-1 Research Scholar, J-1 Short-Term Scholar, or J-1 Visiting Undergraduate Student) should refer to "Scholar Services" section below.

Student WebEx Drop-in Sessions

WebEx Drop-ins are intended for matters regarding F-1 and J-1 student regulations that can be addressed in 10 minutes or less. Upon clicking the WebEx link, students wait in a virtual lobby; student counselors admit students on a first-come, first-served basis. Click here to attend an ISS WebEx Drop-in at the times listed below.

Student Quick Question & Answer (QQA)

Quick Question & Answer (QQA) sessions are intended for matters regarding F-1 and J-1 student regulations that can be addressed in 10 minutes or less. Students must sign up for a session online before arriving in-person.

We will not offer travel signatures during QQA sessions.  Please continue to request travel signatures using the MyISS portal.

To schedule a QQA session with a counselor, please our QQA website to sign up for an in-person session to view the calendar of available dates and times.

  1. Click on the green Sign-Up Required button for the date and time that you would like to schedule your private QQA session with a student immigration counselor.
  2. Log-in using your career account and BoilerKey, fill in the requested information and click "sign-up."
  3. You will receive an email confirmation for the QQA session that you selected.
  4. Please follow "Instructions for Student In-Person Services" below when arriving at ISS. 

The QQA session allows for you to have up to 10 minutes to speak face to face with a student immigration counselor. Please do not sign up for more than one session. Sessions will fill fast and are available on a first come/first served basis. We will monitor to see if additional sessions need to be added.

The QQA sessions are only available to actively enrolled international students.

Individuals that session-hop or sign up for multiple sessions for the same question will not be allowed to schedule themselves into sessions in the future and will be required to call our office for an appointment.

Appointments with Student Counselor

Call 765-494-5770 to request a 30-minute in-person or WebEx appointment with a student counselor. Same day appointments are not available.

Please follow "Instructions for Student In-Person Services" below when arriving at ISS for an in-person appointment. 

Student Documents Ready to Collect

Students who have received an email that an ISS-generated student document is ready to collect from our front desk can visit our office during these times to request it by showing photo ID.

Please follow "Instructions for Student In-Person Services" below to collect your document. You must collect the document yourself. No one else is permitted to do so. Please do not bring friends when collecting documents unless they are also going to join the queue to collect their own documents.  

Instructions for Student In-Person Services

  • Please do not visit our office if you are ill, or if you have been ill in the past three days, or you are exhibiting any of the COVID-19 symptoms that could be associated with COVID-19.
  • Please note to avoid overcrowding in our office and building, we will no longer offer unscheduled, in-person sessions: you must have confirmation of a scheduled in-person session or document to collect.
  • Masks are required to enter Schleman Hall and must remain on until exiting the building.
  • Students must bring Purdue ID card.

Please be patient with our staff as we follow Protect Purdue guidelines established by University leadership. 

  1. When students arrive in Schleman Hall, they should enter through the main entrance facing Hovde Hall. 
  2. Once in the building, students follow the directional signs and floor markings to our office (Rm 136). 
  3. All students must form a queue in the hallway and wait for an ISS staff member to invite them individually into the office.
    • Decals have been added to the floor to allow practicing safer, social distancing protocols while waiting for the opportunity to be served. 
    • Due to space restrictions, the queue must be single file. 
  4. Only one student is allowed to enter our lobby at any time. We will allow only 10 students to be waiting in our lobby at any time to conform with proper social distancing protocols.
  5. Each student will be invited in and instructed to either wait in the lobby for their in-person session or exit through an alternate doorway before the next student will be invited to enter.

 

 

Scholar Services

The International Scholar Services team supports international faculty, staff, postdocs and scholars holding visa status where the primary activity is employment or research: H-1B, e-3, TN, O-1, J-1 Research Scholar, J-1 Short-Term Scholar, or J-1 Visiting Undergraduate Student. International students admitted to a Purdue University degree program should refer to the "Student Services" section above.

Scholar Virtual Meetings

International Scholar Services offer virtual appointments for International Scholars (H-1B, E-3, TN, O-1, permanent residence and J-1 for individuals who are not enrolled at Purdue). At this time we are not offering any appointments in-person.

Scholar Documents 

  • J-1 Short-Term Scholars, Research Scholars or Visiting Undergraduate Students who want to pick up a DS-2019 - You must have received an email instructing them that the document is ready, before you can arrange for delivery or pickup.
  • H-1, E-3, TN or O-1 status holders who want to obtain their original I-797 Receipts or approvals must first submit a request for the document.
  • For permanent residence applicants who need a Supplement J, you must first request this. 

To obtain your document you may either arrange for shipment, or schedule an appointment for pickup:

  • If you prefer shipment, go to https://connect.iss.purdue.edu, scroll to University Employment and then select “Document Shipping Request”. Submit your email address.  An email then will be sent automatically with a link to the eShipGlobal website where you can process a shipping label and input your payment information.  ISS will receive confirmation from the eShipGlobal system once you submit and pay for your shipment. We then will print the shipping label. In most cases, the document will be placed into shipment on Wednesday immediately following submission of the shipping label.
  • If you prefer to pickup your document in person, email schedule an appointment using the email or QR code above. Pickup appointments are available on Thursdays or Friday mornings, at the ground floor of Hovde. Please note - Hovde upper floors and the International Scholar Services offices are still closed.

Scholar Phone Calls: call 6-0653 during Scholar Phone duty times

To contact the scholar services team about a question regarding a Purdue J-1 scholar, J-1 Visiting Undergraduate Student or H-1B employee, please call the scholar team main phone line (6-0653) during these times:

  • Mondays 2 PM to 4 PM

  • Tuesdays 1:30 PM to 3 PM

  • Wednesdays 1:30 PM to 3 PM

  • Thursdays 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM

  • Fridays 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM

Please clearly explain to the front desk that you have a scholar question to be forwarded to the scholar counselor on phone duty.

 

Visiting Scholar and Staff Request (J-1 visa only)

Scholars wishing to submit the paper Visiting Scholar and Staff Request form to the International Scholar Services team may filelocker it to Alayna Espinoza (proctoa) - at https://filelocker.purdue.edu. This form is NOT used by enrolled J-1 Students. The paper form is used for the following requests by current J-1 Research Scholars, J-1 Short-Term Scholars, and J-1 Visiting Undergraduate Students:

  • Adding a dependent
  • Change of Funding
  • Department transfer
  • Replacement of Documents
  • Change of personal information

Travel Requests by International Scholars

Travel Requests now require that an eform be submitted in ISSConnect depending on your visa status. Below are instructions depending on your status.

J-1 Travel Requests

Those in J-1 scholar status who need a signature on their DS2019 to permit their reentry to the US will need to submit a Travel Request eform:

  1. Go to connect.iss.purdue.edu

  2. Click the blue Login button to log in using their Purdue Career Account

  3. Click on J-1 Scholar Services

  4. Click on Travel Request

  5. Complete and submit

  6. Within five (5) business days, ISS will process the eform, either asking for more information or sending email instructions regarding where to go to obtain the signature.

H-1B Travel Requests 

Those in H-1B status will need to submit their travel plans in an eform according to these instructions:

  1. Go to connect.iss.purdue.edu

  2. Click the blue Login button to log in using her Purdue Career Account

  3. Click on University Employment

  4. Click on Update ISS

  5. Click on Start a New Request

  6. Click on Travel Plans

  7. Complete and submit

  8. Within five (5) business days, ISS will process the eform, either asking for more information or sending email instructions regarding the travel plans.

Emergency Contact Number

International students, faculty and staff who are currently at Purdue and who have an emergency situation, such as a lost or stolen passport, may call for assistance when the ISS office is not open for business.

Applicants for admission may not use this number to inquire about admission status or the status of the issuance of a Form I-20 or Form DS 2019.

Please do not use the emergency phone number to inquire about travel signatures or lost or forgotten I-20's.  Email your inquiry to iss@purdue.edu and we will respond as soon as we return to the office.
