J-1 Students: Health Insurance Information

You (and your family, if they travel with you to campus) will be required to carry health insurance while you are a student at Purdue.  U.S. federal law specifically requires minimum health insurance coverage for all J-1 students and their J-2 dependents.

Proof of Insurance Student Deadline

First, the information below does not apply to J-1 scholars at Purdue. On the DS2019, item 4 Exchange Visitor Category states Professor, Research Scholar or Short-term Scholars for J-1 scholars.  For these categories, instructions are attached to the DS2019 giving relevant health insurance information.

For J-1 students, Purdue University requires all international students and family members, including J-1 and J-2 dependents, to carry health insurance.  All international students are required to purchase the Purdue University Student Health Insurance plan as a condition of their enrollment. Individual and private insurance plans DO NOT qualify for a waiver.

The following website provides useful information concerning purchasing Purdue's health insurance plan and links to other sites or necessary forms: Student Insurance | PUSH (purdue.edu)

Proof of insurance must be received in a timely manner.  There are consequences for those that do not meet the stated deadline.  These include late fees, a hold on your account to prevent registration and/or unavailability of transcript, and possible cancellation of classes resulting in violation of your visa status.
