Intercultural Assessment

This is a visual metaphor for measuring success.

It is not always easy to quantify success, particularly when dealing with complex interpersonal skills in a cross-cultural context.  At Purdue, we use a variety of assessment tools to help students take stock of their existing skill levels, visualize their learning goals and feel confident in their ability to work effectively with future colleagues across national, cultural and ethnic boundaries. Similarly, the CILMAR staff assists faculty in selecting assessment tools which will help them understand their students' baseline abilities, map out a suitable learning trajectory for their students, and mentor their students towards greater skills acquisition. 

Purdue's commitment to using assessment to improve intercultural learning has its roots in the AAC&U project to create instruments for Valid Assessment of Learning in Undergraduate Education. In 2012, the Purdue University Senate approved several of the resulting VALUE rubrics as ways to measure the desired embedded outcomes of the Purdue undergraduate core curriculum.  A Purdue-specific adaptation of the Intercultural Knowledge and Competence rubric serves as our foundational definition of the knowledge, skills, and attitudes which make up the fabric of intercultural competence.

CILMAR Assessments in Use at Purdue

There are many inventories and instruments used across campus by faculty, study abroad directors, researchers, program administrators and assessment experts to evaluate the intercultural competency and related skills, knowledge, and attitudes of members of the Purdue community. Below is a partial list of those most commonly used here, along with links to more information about each. Note: Some assessments have associated fees and/or require certification to administer/interpret.
