Summer Start Support

As a member of the Purdue Summer Start Session, you’ll live and study with other members of the Summer Start Learning Community, and develop a strong sense of community as well as academic success. It’s a great way to make sure you feel right at home here at Purdue, even before most other freshmen move in! While we are first and foremost concerned about your academic success, we also know it’s important that you have fun.

Academic Support

Each Summer Start student will have a Peer Mentor (someone who has already been through Summer Start the year before) and a resident assistant or “R.A.” who is an upperclassman and lives in the same residence hall. These students will be your go-to for any questions regarding the inner workings of Purdue and how to succeed here! They’ve been here for a while now, and they’re happy to help you get comfortable.

Summer Start staff, a student’s assigned academic advisor from their college, along with staff at the numerous other offices at Purdue that serve to support students will be available to all Summer Start students throughout the summer months at Purdue. Those Summer Start students who are required to complete Summer Start as a condition of their admission offer will also have a Success Coach assigned to work individually with them during their entire tenure at Purdue.

In addition to your student and staff mentors, we will provide the same level of academic support we do to all Purdue students, including, but is not limited to:

  • academic advising
  • retention specialists
  • counseling services
  • health and wellness resources
  • emergency services

And you always have the Summer Start office staff members here to help you navigate your transition to Purdue. You can contact us at any time!

Lastly, the Summer Start faculty are excited for you to come and join them! Class sizes will be small, and students will attend with other Summer Start peers — developing supportive sessions wherein you can lean on one another and succeed together.

As you can see, there is an entire community of support surrounding you as students in Summer Start! But we’re not ALL about the studying. Summer Start will provide weekly events and field trips. We have concerts, movies, shuttle trips to professional baseball games in Chicago, visits to waterparks, etc. We will post the official schedule as summer gets closer but we can assure that you will not be disappointed in the extra-curricular programming side of Summer Start!
