Credit for Prior Learning - Military
Undistributed Credit for Time in Service
As of Fall 2024, Purdue University started the review of military courses found on the Joint Service Transcript (JST) for course equivalency. This process can be initiated by:
- Submit an official transcript of your Joint Service Transcript to Purdue University
- From there, a review will be completed in conjunction with your plan of study
- Once course equivalencies are found, you will be notified via email from the Veteran and Military Success Center
- These course equivalencies will then be routed to your transcript by the office of the Registrar
Currently, our catalog build of military course equivalency has grown to the following information. This catalog has been gathered through campus collaboration and use of the ACE Military Guide for information about military courses.

Time in Service / Military Experience
Purdue awards undistributed (elective) credit based on years of service. These credits are in blocks of three hours. Your major department, represented by the academic advisor, will determine how these credits can be used. If you have 1 year of service, you earn 4 credits (3 + 1 hours). If you have more than 1 year of service, you earn 8 hours (3 + 3 + 2 hours). To verify the years of service submit either your DD-214 or your Leave and Earnings Statement (LES).
Community College Air Force Transcripts & College Level Course Work (CLEP, DSST, DANTES, & More)
Pursuing transfer credit starts with requesting an electronic and official copy of your transcript to be sent to Purdue University: admissions@purdue.edu.
Pursuing credit through testing information can be found here under the tab, ‘Credit Through Testing'.

Additional Information
- As a disclosure, please be aware that an adjustment of classification in progression of your plan of study, can have the potential to adjust your financial aid package.
- There are specifics to receiving financial aid, such as meeting a minimum and maximum number of credit hours to meet your educational objective. Information about this can be found here.
- In the process of pursuing undistributed credit for time in service and or transfer credit, once credit is applied to your plan of study, it may show that you are 'pushed' farther along with the addition of electives resulting in an adjustment of your financial aid package.
- You can appeal against the decision and explain the undistributed credit/transfer credit for military service/education. Information about this can be found here.
