Performance Evaluations

Student employee performance evaluations are an essential part of the employee’s growth and development. They give students and supervisors the opportunity to discuss performance achievements and address areas that need improvement. Meaningful and effective evaluations help students clarify expectations, set goals, and make connections between academics and work.

General Evaluation Guidelines

In general, all student employees will receive a formal evaluation of their work performance. Evaluations should occur at the end of each fall and spring semester, with summer as an optional evaluation period. Formal evaluations will be completed in the Student Employee Management System and will be tied to merit raise eligibility. Regular, on-going feedback to the student employee is expected and additional evaluations may occur as needed. Additional guidelines:

  • A performance evaluation rating must be assigned for each position a student employee holds
  • A performance evaluation must be completed within the Student Employment Management System prior to the evaluation close date for a student employee to receive a merit increase
  • The position supervisor is responsible for ensuring the completion of the evaluation
  • Students working fewer than 30 total hours during an evaluation period may be exempt from receiving a formal evaluation.

Exceptions

Under certain conditions, students may be exempt from receiving a formal evaluation. If a student employee is exempt from receiving a formal evaluation, the form must be closed in the system.

Evaluation Criteria

All student employees will share four core performance competencies. While the specific tasks a student performs to achieve theses competencies may differ across positions, the performance behaviors are similar. Core competencies include Communication, Ways of Thinking, Interpersonal Skills & Intercultural Knowledge, and Intrapersonal Awareness & Development. See the Student Employment Performance Evaluation Competencies for descriptions and rating scale.
