New workshop offered to faculty: ‘Taking Your Research Public with Op-Eds’
November 1, 2024
The Purdue Policy Research Institute is expanding its op-ed initiative to collaborate with the Office of Research on a new workshop for faculty. On Nov. 19, PPRI Faculty Fellow Kathryn Cramer Brownell, will lead the workshop “Taking Your Research Public with Op-Eds: Why and How To Do It.”
This is being held in conjunction with the Purdue Research Speakers Initiative.
This workshop is designed to offer faculty yet another high-impact way to share their research. “Public writing through op-eds and guest essays are a well-established and effective way to broaden the reach of scholarly works,” said Brownell, who is also a professor of history and senior editor for the “Made By History” section of Time magazine.
Brownell will lead a session that “discusses strategies for writing and placing articles in news outlets that allow your work to reach your target audiences, whether funding agencies, alumni or the general public.”
The in-person session will take place 1-2 p.m. Nov. 19, on campus. Interested faculty members can register by emailing Peter Shelby in the Office of Research.
Designed to broaden public understanding and appreciation of how Purdue researchers are making a positive impact on the world, the Purdue Research Speakers Initiative offers the following sessions for faculty each quarter:
- “Talking to Media and Handling Difficult Questions” (virtual group session)
- “Presenting with Impact” (virtual group session)
- “Taking Your Research Public with Op-Eds: Why and How To Do It” (in-person group session)
- Individualized coaching
