Purdue named most recognized public university in U.S., No. 4 overall in Global University Visibility rankings

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — For the third consecutive year, Purdue University was ranked as the nation’s most recognized public university while climbing two spots to No. 4 among all universities in the world in the latest 2026-27 Global University Visibility (GUV) rankings.

In the study examining 1,200 universities that command the most global attention, Purdue trailed only Harvard University, the Masschusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University with major gains in Purdue’s visibility score fueled by double-digit percentage jumps in website visitors and news mentions.

The GUV’s rankings, compiled by U.S.-based market research firm American Caldwell and released July 13, measure real-world public attention rather than academic reputation, tracking how much visibility each university generates across news media, the web, social platforms and public search behavior over the 12-month period that ran from July 2025 to June 2026.

Driving Purdue’s impressive surge to remain among the top 10 of the world’s most recognizable universities in the GUV rankings were high marks in several indicators, including website visitors, news mentions, public interest, social media reach, YouTube viewership and additional signals not captured by traditional academic rankings.

Purdue surpassed University of Toronto and University of Oxford from last year’s GUV rankings. The next nearest U.S. public institution to Purdue this year was Texas A&M University, which ranked No. 6 overall. UCLA was the nearest Big Ten institution, coming in at No. 10 overall.
