As the new academic year is set to get underway, the university’s Traffic and Parking Regulations have been updated to reflect registration and storage requirements for electric and motor-powered vehicles or EMPVs. EMPVs include personal scooters, Veo and other shared devices and similar modes of transportation.
The following updates have been made to the regulations:
- Personally-owned EMPVs must be registered with Parking Operations every two years.
- EMPVs are not permitted to be operated, stored or charged inside any part of university buildings without the written permission of the Senior Director of Environmental Health and Safety.
- EMPVs may only be parked in bicycle racks, on bicycle pads or in locations designated for EMPV parking on campus.
- EMPVs may be stored in U-racks in the Grant Street, Harrison Street and Northwestern Avenue parking garages. Storage in other campus parking garages is not permitted.
Any EMPV found in violation of these regulations may be removed and/or ticketed with a violation notice, similar to the process that’s currently in place for abandoned bicycles and EMPVs. If you believe an EMPV may have been removed, contact Parking Operations.
“We have implemented these changes in effort to enhance safety in campus buildings as EMPVs have become a very popular mode of transportation. A taskforce was created to help navigate the changes and determine the best way to move forward,” said Purdue University Fire Chief Brad Anderson. “These changes also ensures that we are aligned with other Big Ten institutions who have similar regulations in place.”
These regulations will be enforced this academic year, beginning Aug. 25. Users are encouraged to register their EMPVs with Parking Operations before then.
To register an EMPV, bring a photo of the device’s serial number to Parking Operations at Stewart Center in room G054 and ask about the registration process. Download the 529Garage app prior to registration. An EMPV is not registered until Parking Operations has confirmed the information and a sticker has been distributed.
Parking Operations is currently working to provide new ridership opportunities with the shared EMPV service, Veo. More information will be available in the coming weeks.
