Caleb Neal was offered the Gilman Scholarship to study abroad in Colombia at the Universidad Escuela de Administración, Finanzas e Instituto Tecnológico in Medellin. While there, he looks forward to increasing his language skills as he expands into the realm of legal Spanish. This experience taking courses in public ethics and political economics will prove invaluable to this aspiring legal professional.

 

The power of conversation to combat feelings of isolation is something Caleb knows well. Interactions with his community inspired him to pursue immigration law. Just talking with someone and listening to their stories can be enough, and by improving his Spanish skills, Caleb can reach across what might otherwise be a significant barrier to supporting immigrants in his community.

 

Caleb plans to present to the Boiler Green Initiative as his proposed follow-on project. He will share what he learned in South America about their environmentally conscious practices, display photos and videos of his time there, and conduct a demonstration of water purification systems that model those in Medellin.
