Offered the Gilman Scholarship, Haley Miller fulfilled this mission by integrating her experience as a Horizons student at Purdue into creating a vision for the next steps of her professional development. Haley discovered an interest in counseling and mentoring while enrolled in a semester-long training class to become a mentor to freshmen in the Horizons program, which supports first generation college students.  Not only did she learn about the Gilman Scholarship as a Horizons student, but she was motivated to keep Horizons students informed of this opportunity by presenting her follow-on project to this audience.

 

Eager to build on the listening and communication skills that she gained as a mentor, Haley chose to explore psychology more deeply through a study abroad program in Vienna Austria.  In addition to learning from a different cultural and historical perspective, Haley was curious to learn from a different approach to counseling skills and mental health than one finds in the United States.
