Offered the Gilman Scholarship, Victor Garcia Mosqueda fulfilled this mission by seeking to understand the rich cultural context for his chosen profession.  A Planetary Science major at Purdue, Victor anticipates that he will pursue a master’s degree in Astrophysics on his path to becoming an astronaut.  Citing the historical significance of the space race between the US and the USSR, Victor was motivated to pursue a summer Russian Area Studies program through the Council on International Education Exchange (CIEE), including a trip to the world’s largest planetarium in St. Petersburg.

Victor approaches the opportunity to become multilingual with the insight of someone who learned English through immersion when his family came to the United States from Mexico. Victor notes how this personal experience improved his cross-cultural skills for observing verbal and non-verbal communication and he anticipates that the expanse of his world view will continue to grow.
