Sophia Dietz was awarded the Gilman Scholarship to study abroad in Denmark, Sweden, Germany, and Italy on the Danish Institute for Study Abroad – Stockholm program. This program focuses on comparative healthcare systems between Scandinavia and Europe which both are very different from the U.S. As an aspiring healthcare professional, she looks forward to the mixed lecture, clinical, and tour aspects of this program which provides her with experience in four different countries’ healthcare systems and approaches to human health.

Sophia constantly seeks to give back to her communities. In the U.S., she volunteers in food banks. She intends to continue this work while abroad, which will give her an inside look at how other countries’ varied diets impact the selection of food available at their food banks.

At Purdue, Sophia is a Biology Ambassador which enables her to address prospective student questions, including ones about study abroad opportunities. As her proposed follow-on project, she plans to collaborate with biology advisors to make a short promotional video with her experiences abroad and with Gilman which will supplement her presentation and discussions on selecting and financing study abroad for biology majors.
