Tatum Crone received a Gilman Scholarship to study abroad in Boma Village, Tanzania. The program in Tanzania caught her interest because of the opportunity to explore English language acquisition in children in addition to leading one of the four service projects this program will complete. As an aspiring speech-language pathologist, this program was the perfect match for her commitment to studying speech and language development.

Tatum’s motivation to speech-language pathology stems from an experience she had in 2014 that led to her curiosity of the language process and the impact of injury and impairment on it. Finding out about the frequency adults require rehabilitation after brain related injuries inspired her commitment to this path. For her, the next step is learning about second language acquisition so that she can better understand the language milestones of learning language post-childhood. This understanding will improve her ability to treat adults who require speech therapy.
