Allizae Crayton was awarded the Gilman Scholarship to study abroad in South Korea as an exchange student at Yonsei University in Seoul. While there, she plans to take multiple courses on economy, including Korean economy. She is looking forward to observing how culture affects behavioral economics in both the U.S. and South Korea which will provide insight to potential influences on the diverse communities she hopes to work with in the future.
Language sparks Allizae’s interest and motivation. Already familiar with French, she picked up Korean as her pandemic hobby. Korean has a very different writing and grammar system from French and English, but with the close ties between language and culture, studying Korean led her to consider studying abroad in South Korea to better understand those connections.
Allizae brings creativity to her two-pronged approach to her follow-on service project. She remembers her former high school had many students who might want to pursue study abroad through Gilman. Therefore, part of her proposed follow-on project is to write and publish and article about her experiences at Yonsei with Gilman in their school newspaper. The other part of her proposal involves becoming a study abroad ambassador and creating a brochure to encourage other college students to consider their options, especially in Asia.
