Sarah Bhuiya was awarded the Gilman Scholarship to study abroad in South Korea on the Yonsei University – International Summer School program. Yonsei is located in Seoul, the place to be to learn Korean and visit the Gwangjang Market. Already familiar with the foundations of spoken and written Korean and some aspects of Korean culture, she is ready to take her knowledge to the next level. She looks forward to being able to grow her ability to navigate in cross-cultural environments and increase her communication skills.

 

Dance is another of Sarah’s talents. At Purdue, she is a member of Variasian, a KPOP dance team. She got to take a class with Yoon Jinwoo, a prominant Korean choreographer, while he was at Purdue. In South Korea, she plans to improve her dance skills through attending classes at well-known dance studios, including the 1Million Dance Studio.

 

Her dance team participation also inspires Sarah’s proposed follow-on project. She hopes to teach her team one of the KPOP dances she learned while in South Korea. Not only will they share the benefits of her study abroad experience and see the possibilities Gilman can provide, but also, they will have a chance to develop their own dance techniques and cultural awareness.
