Sohinee Bera joined the ranks of more than 400,000 Fulbrighters who have gone abroad to conduct research, study, or teach in one of 165 partner countries since 1946.
On the 75th anniversary of the Fulbright program, Sohinee goes to Germany not only with the English Teaching Assistant Award, but also with a desire to connect more deeply with the immigrant experience, including that of her own family. A Bengali-American, whose family migrated to Germany before she was born, Sohinee integrates her awareness of belonging into everything from her artwork to her teaching.
The depth of her professional and personal experience is revealed even through her interest in the opportunity to connect outside of her workday with the Munich-based project called the Urban Gardens for the Social Integration of Migrants (UGAIN). She anticipates teaching about building a connection to the land by growing their own food. Sohinee sees the Fulbright experience as the next step in her professional development. She plans to complete a master’s degree in communications with a focus on working with refugee and immigrant populations.
