Established in 2001, the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program is committed to sending American students of limited financial means from all backgrounds to study abroad.

Offered the Gilman Scholarship, Quinton Austin chose a study abroad program in Japan. Although he ultimately had to decline due to the pandemic, his motivation stemmed from a desire not only to become multilingual, but also to acquire a global perspective on his profession. Despite having studied Spanish, Russian, and German, Quinton sought to learn yet another language by going to Japan on a study abroad program through Nanzan University.

Envisioning himself as a mechanical engineer who collaborates and communicates across countries and disciplines, Quinton was motivated to pursue a study abroad program that integrated multiple facets of learning from academic and professional skills to cultural and community engagement.

Proposing to present to the Purdue Anime Club for the follow-on project, Quinton planned to expand the reference frame of this audience by comparing the depiction of Japanese culture in popular anime with his firsthand experience of living in Japan.
