Human Resources announces updates to lateral moves, internal promotions guidelines
A review of Purdue’s job family structure, which has been in place for four years, has resulted in updates to the guidelines related to lateral moves and internal promotions. These enhancements will better position the university to adapt to internal and external market conditions, while providing some latitude to remain competitive and recognize professional growth.
- Lateral moves: Offers for lateral moves will generally remain consistent with current practices and will not warrant an increase. A chart is available for guidance. However, it is recognized that an increase may be appropriate in certain circumstances. In these instances, departments can request consideration for a nominal increase. If there are unique circumstances to consider, units may contact compensation@purdue.edu for consultation.
- Internal promotions: All internal promotional increases (job postings or January/July cycles) will now be viewed using the same compensation guidelines as external hire offers. In most cases, following these guidelines should be appropriate. However, there could be a need for variances based on circumstances such as knowledge, skills, experience, market conditions and departmental equity.
Units/departments must still obtain applicable departmental and financial approvals for all job offers and internal pay changes. Please contact compensation@purdue.edu for consultation on these updates or any questions on the job family structure.
