Recap of University Senate’s Sept. 12 meeting

Here is a recap of the University Senate’s meeting on Sept. 12. Minutes from the meeting will be posted on the Senate website closer to the next meeting on Oct. 17.

Chair remarks. In her introductory remarks, Colleen Brady, chair of the University Senate, outlined her goals for the 2022-23 academic year as chair. You can read her remarks here.

President’s remarks. In his remarks, President Mitch Daniels announced that total enrollment on Purdue’s West Lafayette campus reached a record 50,884 students, including 37,949 undergrads. Daniels also provided an update on the new Patty Jischke Early Care and Education Center and was later joined by Provost Jay Akridge and Carrie Berger, associate dean for strategic initiatives at Purdue Polytechnic Institute, to give an update on the IUPUI realignment. 

Update on benefits. Candace Shaffer, senior director of benefits, provided an update on benefits, including 2023 health plans and health-care appreciation awards.

ITEMS FOR ACTION 

Faculty Affairs Committee nomination. The Senate Nominating Committee approved the following nominee for the committee: Françoise Brosseau-Lapré, speech, language and hearing sciences, one year.

Nominating Committee nomination. The Senate Nominating Committee approved the following nominees for the committee: Abdelfattah Nour, basic medical sciences, Fall 2022; Richard Mattes, nutrition science, one year.

Adviser to the Senate nomination. The Senate Nominating Committee approved the following nominee for the committee: Kristina Wong Davis, vice provost for enrollment management, three years.

Adviser to the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee.  The Senate Nominating Committee approved the following nominee for the committee: Kristina Wong Davis, vice provost for enrollment management, three years.

Promoting civic engagement. Professor David Sanders presented a document proposing that attendance at certain events, such as Purdue Student Government Senate sessions, would go toward fulfilling the civics literacy proficiency graduation requirement. Senators voted on the proposal, and it was defeated.  

Senate meeting modality. Brady presented for a vote a preference for modality for Senate meetings for the 2022-23 academic year. Senators voted to continue holding meetings virtually for the academic year. 

ITEMS FOR DISCUSSION

Authorship of scholarly works standard. Sanders presented a document proposing that the University Senate endorses an authorship of scholarly works standard and encourages the dissemination of its content. The document will be voted on at the Oct. 17 meeting.
