License plate recognition testing at gated garages this week; drivers reminded to keep license plate clean of snow and dirt

Purdue Parking and Transportation Services will be testing license plate recognition software at the Grant Street and Harrison Street parking garages on the West Lafayette campus this week.

During the testing period, those with “A” or “Reserved” parking permits may receive access to the gated garages without the use of their garage access cards. If the software successfully reads the license plate as the vehicle approaches the arm, the gate will automatically open. However, functionality may be intermittent during testing, and permit holders will need to scan their garage access cards if the gates do not automatically open after a few seconds. Visitors and those without a parking permit should continue to take a ticket to pay for timed parking.

After the brief testing period concludes, the use of a garage access card will again be required for permit holders to enter or exit either of these garages beginning on Monday (Nov. 11). Parking staff will review the results from testing, address potential shortcomings and continue planning for future implementation at these locations, which will be announced at a later date.

License plate recognition was implemented at non-gated parking garages in August 2018.

Also, all individuals who park on campus are reminded to keep their license plates clear of dirt, snow or other debris and continue to park with their license plates facing the drive lane. This applies to parking garages, parking lots and street parking where Purdue parking permits are required. Vehicle owners may be subject to receiving a parking citation if their license plate is covered or obstructed.

Questions about license plate recognition may be directed to Parking and Transportation Services at 765-494-9497.
