‘Sleep Awareness’ is focus of upcoming Center for Healthy Living workshop; register by Aug. 13

When it comes to overall health and wellness, recognizing exercise and healthy eating as important factors is easy to do. But what about sleep? Surprisingly, sleep might actually be considered the most important aspect of well-being. Therefore, the Center for Healthy Living (CHL) on Purdue’s West Lafayette campus is offering a “Sleep Awareness” workshop on Aug. 14.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than one-third of Americans don’t get enough sleep. In fact, due to the prevalence of sleep disorders in the United States, the CDC declares sleep disorders a public health epidemic. Research conducted by the CDC reflects that large numbers of Americans experience issues associated with lack of adequate sleep, including problems concentrating, driving and working.

Additionally, lack of sleep is linked to several chronic conditions such as obesity, depression, Type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

“During the workshop we will discuss the value of sleep as a critical wellness factor,” says Cheryl Laszynski, registered nurse health coach at the CHL, who will lead the presentation. “People are tired in today’s world, and it’s affecting them more than they realize when it comes to their well-being. We want to help individuals learn more about the importance of getting enough sleep and how it will impact them overall. For example, individuals who are struggling with weight loss might find getting enough sleep actually improves their weight loss journey.”

The workshop will take place from 12:10 to 12:50 p.m. on Aug. 14 in the Córdova Recreational Sports Center’s Wellness Conference Room, Room 2236.

Interested individuals should register by Aug. 13 via the Healthy Boiler Portal. Registration link can be found under the “Engage” tab, “Wellness Events” on the portal’s homepage.

Workshops provided by the Center for Healthy Living (and in conjunction with Purdue Extension) are free to all benefits-eligible faculty and staff and dependents covered on a Purdue medical plan. Any questions can be directed to the CHL at 765-494-0111.
