A worldwide epidemic could be more than a movie premise. But if author Gina Kolata and Purdue’s disease experts can draw on lessons of the past, especially the 1918 flu, and knowledge of today, ways to prevent or contain a threatened pandemic may be available. It is very literally a global challenge, and Purdue is engaging today (Sept. 23) in global-scale discussion. Don’t Miss It!

SEPTEMBER 23

“What IF the Next Pandemic is Inevitable?” will shed light on a dark-sounding topic. A pair of events will feature Gina Kolata, author of “Flu: The Story of the Great Influenza Pandemic of 1918.” She will speak at 10:30 a.m.-noon in STEW, Loeb Playhouse. Then she will join in a panel of Purdue experts to discuss vaccination at 1:30-2:30 p.m. in Lynn Hall, Room 1136. These are events in the Ideas Festival, the centerpiece of Purdue's yearlong Giant Leaps Sesquicentennial Campaign. News release

Purdue Theatre’s ‘These Shining Lives’ Purdue Theatre’s “These Shining Lives”

"These Shining Lives" by Melanie Marnich continues its run as Purdue Theatre’s season opener, directed by Emily A. Rollie, assistant professor of theatre arts at Central Washington University, guest director. The drama is based on a true story, in which women working with radium in a watch company become ill, sue the company and develop solidarity. 7:30 p.m. Pao Hall, Nancy T. Hansen Theatre. SEPTEMBER 24

“Creating Assassin’s Creed Odyssey” will be a talk by Scott Phillips, alumnus and video game director. This is part of the  College of Liberal Arts’ series called At the Intersection of Liberal Arts and STEM. 7 p.m. STEW, Fowler Hall. SEPTEMBER 26

Few seats remain available for “What IF We Led an International Space Collaboration?: An Evening with Ellen Ochoa, NASA Astronaut and First Latina in Space.” Ochoa also was the second female director of Johnson Space Center in Houston (2013-18). 6:30-7:30 p.m. PMU, North Ballroom. News release

Purdue 2050: Conference of the Future will bring a two-day immersion in futuristic technology likely to appear in 2030-50. "Ethics of Eating: Promoting Personal and Global Choices" will be a free three-day conference by Purdue’s Ingestive Behavior Research Center addressing the question and theme of “What IF We Could Feed the World Without Harming the Planet?” It will open at 7 p.m. Monday with a public lecture, "Eating Our Way Through the Anthropocene: The Challenges, Risks and Ethics of Actions,” by Jessica Fanzo, Bloomberg Distinguished Associate Professor of Global Food and Agricultural Policy and Ethics, Johns Hopkins University.
