Skin cancer awareness is focus of upcoming Center for Healthy Living workshop

As summer approaches and the sun’s appearance becomes more common, the Center for Healthy Living on Purdue’s West Lafayette campus is offering a workshop focused on skin cancer awareness. The workshop will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. May 1 in Stewart Center, Room 313.

Presented by Whitney Soto, registered nurse health coach at CHL, the workshop will introduce and/or remind participants of important factors to take into consideration when spending time outdoors.

“While the sun has the ability to positively influence our lives in many ways, including aiding in the production of vitamin D, we also need to be aware of the risks associated with long-term exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) light, and the importance of protecting our skin,” Soto says. “In recognition of Skin Cancer Awareness Month (recognized every May), and the fact that skin cancer is among the most prevalent forms of cancer in the United States, we invite employees to join us for this important discussion.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, despite efforts to address skin cancer risk factors, skin cancer rates have continued to increase in the United States and worldwide. The majority of skin cancer is attributed to overexposure to UV light.

Registration deadline is April 30 via the Healthy Boiler Portal. Registration link can be found under the “Engage” tab, “Wellness Events” on the portal’s homepage.

Additionally, this workshop will be offered as a webinar from 2-3 p.m. May 7. Registration for the webinar is also available online; the deadline to register is May 6.

Questions regarding the workshop can be directed to CHL at 765-494-0111.
