Vint Cerf, Google chief internet evangelist who is widely known as a “Father of the Internet,” will take a “non-expert” look at artificial intelligence and this emerging idea from all angles when he visits Purdue on April 5. “What IF Machines Thought like Humans,” which is sponsored by the College of Engineering, will take place at 1 p.m. in Stewart Center’s Fowler Hall. The event is a part of Purdue’s Ideas Festival, the centerpiece of Purdue’s Giant Leaps Sesquicentennial Campaign, and is part of a busy week of stretching minds. Don't Miss It!

Nobel laureate Roald Hoffmann will join Provost Jay Akridge for a fireside chat, which will follow a talk, “Research Strategy: Teach” by Hoffmann, a Nobelist in chemistry. Overall topic is “Research, Teaching, and Engagement in the 21st Century Land-grant University.” 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. STEW, Fowler Hall. Event

Brian Lamb, alumnus and C-SPAN founder, will talk with Doug Mills, photographer in the New York Times’ Washington bureau, in a C-SPAN Conversation. 6-8 p.m. STEW, Fowler Hall. This is an event in the Giant Leaps Series, part of the Purdue sesquicentennial celebration. Event

“What IF Eating Insects Saved the Planet?” is a delicious topic that Joseph Yoon, a chef and executive director of the Brooklyn Bugs information/advocacy group, will partake of with Andrea Liceaga, associate professor of food science and director of the Sensory Evaluation Laboratory at Purdue. The focus is nutrition, especially protein, from insects. This event is a part of Purdue’s Ideas Festival, the centerpiece of Purdue’s Giant Leaps Sesquicentennial Campaign, addressing the IF theme “Health, Longevity and Quality of Life.” 5:30-7 p.m. WALC, Room 1132. APRIL 6

Spring Fest, delighting all ages and showcasing Purdue in a fun way, is back. It’s 10 a.m.-4 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday, but some activities, especially those involving live animals, are Saturday-only. Website

The College of Veterinary Medicine open house, with the theme "The Human-Animal Bond," will include longtime favorites and new displays/presentations. 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Lynn Hall. Website

A Purdue alumnus and Chinese tech mogul will speak in “Giant Leaps Series: Global Tech Innovator Kong Kat Wong.” The event moderator will be Arnold Chen, managing director of the Burton D. APRIL 9-10

The 20th annual CERIAS Security Symposium will take up the theme of “What IF Our Future was More Secure?” by overcoming cyber threats. Check-in at 8 a.m.; program at 9 a.m. STEW, Room 302. This is an event in the Ideas Festival, the centerpiece of Purdue's yearlong Giant Leaps Sesquicentennial Campaign. Registration needed: Complimentary for academic persons, except optional lunches. Frontline figures in battling hunger will be at Purdue for the Ending Global Hunger Colloquium, which will use the theme: “What If We Were Able to End World Hunger?” Welcome at 8:15 a.m.; program at 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. each day. PMU and STEW. This is an event in the "Health, Longevity and Quality of Life" theme of the Ideas Festival, the centerpiece of Purdue's yearlong Giant Leaps Sesquicentennial Campaign. Veronica Swift featuring the Emmet Cohen Trio will take the stage. Purdue Theatre will bring “She Kills Monsters” by Qui Nguyen, a dramatic comedy in the world of fantasy role-playing games. Pao Hall, Nancy T. Hansen Theatre.
