PPRI workshop to focus on workforce impacts of connected and autonomous transportation vehicles

Discovery Park's Purdue Policy Research Institute will host its final workshop in its series on connected and autonomous transportation vehicles on Thursday (Feb. 7) with a focus on "What IF Self-driving Cars Impact Jobs? CATV Ethics + Policy Workshop: Workforce Impact." The workshop, set for 11 a.m.-3 p.m. in Purdue Memorial Union's East and West Faculty Lounges, is part of Purdue's Ideas Festival. Lunch is provided for participants and a brief reception follows. Registration information is available online.

A diverse panel of experts will kick off the workshop and participants to engage in discussions exploring what we know, what we can do, and what we still need to understand about the workforce impacts of CATV. West Lafayette Mayor John Dennis will join the conversation, sharing a mayor’s perspective during the outcomes discussion portion of the workshop. A summary report will be made available following the workshops.

Panelists are:

  • Shelia Cotten, professor of sociology, Michigan State University.
  • Barrett Caldwell, professor of industrial engineering, Purdue.
  • Maya Rockeymoore, president and CEO of Global Policy Solutions.
  • Tyler Reeb, director of research and workforce development at the Center for International Trade and Transportation.
  • Jeremy Reynolds, professor of sociology and panel moderator, Purdue.

The workshop series consists of four events taking place during the 2018-19 academic year. The events feature a panel of experts who will discuss the implications of cybersecurity, security, infrastructure, human takeover and safety, ethics in algorithms and the workforce in the context of how they relate to CATV.

The workshop series is a part of Purdue's celebration of its 150th year and specifically of the anniversary's Ideas Festival, the centerpiece of Purdue's Giant Leaps Sesquicentennial Campaign. The Ideas Festival will feature a series of events that connect world-renowned speakers and Purdue expertise in a conversation on the most critical problems facing the world. "AI, Algorithms and Automation: Balancing Humanity and Technology" is one of the Ideas Festival themes.
