‘Be Heart Smart’ series beginning Feb. 5 to cover risks, numbers, healthy cooking, taking action

The Center for Healthy Living on Purdue’s West Lafayette Campus, in partnership with Purdue Extension Tippecanoe County, is offering a four-week program focused on learning how to reduce the risks for heart disease.

“Be Heart Smart” begins Feb. 5 and meets weekly on Tuesdays through Feb. 26. Sessions are held from noon to 1 p.m. at the Córdova Recreational Sports Center, Wellness Conference Room (Room 2236).

Each session focuses on a different heart-related topic:

  • Feb. 5: Know Your Risks
  • Feb. 12: Know Your Numbers
  • Feb. 19: Heart Healthy Cooking
  • Feb. 26: Taking Action

The program will teach participants how to monitor their risk factors for heart disease and make simple changes to their daily routines that will improve their heart health. In addition, participants will learn what risk factors they can control, how using the DASH Eating Plan can help and how to incorporate physical activity to better their heart.

Those interested should register by Feb. 4 via the Healthy Boiler Portal (registration link can be found under “Wellness Events” on the portal’s home page) or by calling Purdue Extension Tippecanoe County at 765-474-0793.

Workshops provided by the Center for Healthy Living are free to all benefits-eligible faculty and staff and dependents covered on a Purdue medical plan.
