RecycleMania Tournament underway; recycle to help Purdue's rankings
Physical Facilities encourages the West Lafayette campus community to recycle paperwork and other materials that are no longer needed during this year's RecycleMania competition while following Data Classification and Handling and Data Destruction guidelines.
Purdue is competing against other higher education institutions in the U.S. and Canada during the eight-week tournament, which runs through March 31. Participating institutions measure materials that are collected each week with goals of increasing recycling and minimizing waste that would be sent to the landfill. Tournament categories include per capita recycling rate, total volume of recycling and least amount of total waste.
Purdue has competed in RecycleMania since 2010. Last year, Purdue won the Campus Engagement Case Study Competition for its waste minimization initiative. Additionally, Purdue ranked 11th out of 214 institutions and first in Indiana in the Total Recycling category. Purdue ranked 63rd out of 244 institutions in the Per Capita Classic category and 12th out of 39 institutions and first in Indiana in the Electronics category.
Questions about Purdue's involvement in this year’s contest, including which materials are recyclable, should be directed to the Office of Campus Master Planning and Sustainability at 765-494-2481 or sustainability@purdue.edu.
