Faculty and staff input invited to shape data science research initiative

As a follow-up to the Jan. 26 Integrated Data Sciences Initiative Forum hosted by Jay Akridge, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs and diversity, and Suresh Garimella, executive vice president for research and partnerships and the R. Eugene and Susie E. Goodson Distinguished Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Discovery Park is hosting four targeted data science research workshops focused on health care; defense; ethics, society and policy; and fundamentals, methods and algorithms.

In consultation with the newly announced data science steering committee, input from faculty and staff attending the workshops will be used to help shape an initial Data Science Initiative investment in research and identify areas where Purdue is well-positioned to lead a transdisciplinary effort in data science in each of the focused workshops topics. The workshops are open to all Purdue faculty and staff, who may register for any workshops that are of interest.

Following these workshops, a request for proposals will be released on March 14 for each of the four identified data science target areas. Proposals should be submitted by multidisciplinary teams and generate new insights and game-changing contributions to the respective data science area. The submission deadline will be April 19 for all proposals. Funded projects will be announced in early May with an anticipated kickoff by May 29. It is anticipated that winning teams will be funded for up to two years.
