Eagerness for a freshening of the flow of ideas is a mark of a thriving campus, and the Presidential Lecture Series is stepping up twice very soon. On Jan. 30, it will bring J.D. Vance, a political commentator, investment firm principal and best-selling author of "Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis." On Feb. 1, the series will present Stan Druckenmiller, whose investment firm posted astonishing returns during its 1981-2010 run and who has received acclaim for outsized philanthropy. It's about where the mind starts and goes. Don't Miss It!

Margot L. Shetterly, author of the "Hidden Figures" book that inspired the current movie, will speak; she also is the founder of a project to recover names and feats of women who worked at NACA and NASA in 1930s through 1980s. 7:30 p.m. STEW, Loeb Playhouse. News release

Books and Coffee brings its annual dose of relief from winter with faculty talks about currently talked-about books. This year has a variation: sessions will be Feb. 9, 16 and 23, then March 23 so President Daniels can fit a turn as speaker into his calendar. 4-5 p.m.; locations vary.
