Students, faculty and staff invited to participate in Love Data Week

Purdue University is gearing up to participate in the Big Ten Academic Alliance (BTAA) Data Viz Championship during Love Data Week, scheduled from Feb. 12-16. This unique competition invites Purdue students, faculty and staff to showcase their data visualization skills and vie for the prestigious title of BTAA Data Viz Champion. 

What is the BTAA Data Viz Championship?

The Data Viz Championship is an unparalleled opportunity for the Purdue community to demonstrate its prowess in data visualization. Whether you’re a student looking to delve into the intricacies of a Lego Brick Database or a faculty or staff member eager to showcase existing visualizations related to your institution, this competition provides a platform to shine. 

Getting involved

  • Share the opportunity: Encourage students and colleagues to participate. 
  • Volunteer: Evaluate student submissions by volunteering before Jan. 12. 
  • Submit your visualization or nominate a peer’s work by Jan. 19. 

How to participate

Visit the competition website for full details and links to enter the competition or volunteer. 

Students

  • Challenge: Individuals or teams of two can participate.
  • Timeline: Visualizations using the Lego Brick Database, available on Kaggle, must be submitted by midnight Jan. 19.
  • Winning opportunities: Purdue students have the chance to win cash prizes and advance to the BTAA Championship.

Faculty/Staff

  • Challenge: Submit existing visualizations related to your institution’s information. Ensure that submissions follow institutional data policies and are publicly available on the web for the challenge’s duration.
  • Winning opportunities: One visualization will be selected to represent Purdue in the larger BTAA Data Viz Championship, offering bragging rights within Purdue and the broader Big Ten community.

Important dates 

  • Jan. 19: Deadline for all submissions. 
  • Week of Jan. 22: Purdue winners announced. 
  • Feb. 8-16: Visualizations and voting go live for the Big Ten competition. 
  • Feb.16: Virtual Big Ten showcase at 1 p.m.
