National Alliance on Mental Illness to offer free online classes March 6-April 24

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is the nation’s largest grassroots organization for individuals with mental illness and their families, which includes NAMI affiliates across the country. NAMI West Central Indiana (NAMI-WCI) serves Tippecanoe County and its seven surrounding counties: Benton, Carroll, Clinton, Fountain, Montgomery, Warren and White. NAMI affiliates, including NAMI-WCI, offer a variety of free support and education programs. Upcoming virtual classes offered by NAMI-WCI, which support the behavioral health pillar of the Healthy Boiler Program, include:

NAMI Family-to-Family Class

March 6-April 24 (participants are allowed to miss up to two weeks), 6:30-9 p.m.

Family-to-Family is a free, eight-week education program for family, friends and significant others of adults with mental health conditions. The course is designed to increase understanding and advocacy skills while helping participants maintain their own well-being. The program is taught by trained family members who have a loved one with a mental health condition. Family-to-Family is an evidence-based program. NAMI Peer-to-Peer Class

March 6-April 24 (participants are allowed to miss up to two weeks), 6-8 p.m.

Peer-to-Peer is led by peers who have mental health conditions. A great resource for information on mental health and recovery, the class offers respect, understanding, encouragement and hope. The class also builds on the strength and resilience of participants.

Faculty and staff can review the Mental Health Resources webpage for a variety of available resources and information on Purdue’s health plan coverage for mental health and substance abuse. 

To assist students

Faculty and staff who work with students or have a student at home can direct them to the resources below for behavioral health assistance. Note: United Healthcare Student Resources (UHCSR) — medical plan provider for students and graduate students — offers 292 unique mental health providers serving at various locations that are in-network with UHCSR within Tippecanoe County. The list is available here. Additionally, students have access to HealthiestYou, which provides virtual access to mental health care as part of UHCSR’s plan. All services are free for students covered under the UHCSR insurance plan.
