WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — In honor of the Boilermaker Special's 75th anniversary, Purdue University has commissioned a T-shirt featuring the original Boilermaker Special logo and recognizing the year – 1940 – that the mascot was introduced to campus.
The T-shirts will go on sale for $25 starting Monday (Sept. 14) around campus at the Purdue Team Store, University Book Store, Purdue West, Black & Gold Mine, University Spirit and the Purdue Official Online Store.
The Boilermaker Special is the university's official mascot and is a replica of a Victorian-era locomotive. A Purdue student conceived it in the 1930s to exemplify the university's engineering and agricultural heritage, and it debuted on the first day of classes in 1940. The Purdue Reamer Club maintains the Special.
