Purdue named Innovation and Economic Prosperity University
July 10, 2014
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue University has been designated an Innovation and Economic Prosperity University by the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities.
In naming Purdue an Innovation and Economic Prosperity University, APLU recognizes that the university works with public- and private-sector partners in Indiana and the region to support economic development through a variety of activities, including innovation and entrepreneurship, technology transfer, talent and workforce development, and community development.
“Public universities serve as economic engines for their local communities and states by conducting cutting edge research to reach new breakthroughs, and by developing the talent to help existing businesses grow stronger and enabling new ones to develop and thrive,” APLU President Peter McPherson said. “The 14 institutions receiving the 2014 Innovation & Economic Prosperity University designation serve as models. They demonstrate how public research universities extend beyond their campuses to engage their communities in economic development that creates jobs and improves lives.”
Purdue received the designation after conducting a thorough self-review and subsequently submitting an application that went through a rigorous independent review process.
“Over a six-month period, we carefully analyzed data and surveyed internal and external stakeholders to document Purdue’s impact on innovation and economic prosperity,” said Steve Abel, associate vice president for engagement. “Perhaps the most critical indicator is acknowledgement that the efforts of Purdue and its state and regional partners have impacts going both ways, the essence of an engaged land-grant university.”
In its application, Purdue highlighted its work in technology transfer, entrepreneurial education and support, and regional and community economic development.
The other universities receiving the Innovation and Economic Prosperity designation this year are Georgia Institute of Technology, Indiana University, North Carolina State University, Pennsylvania State University, South Dakota State University, Texas Tech University, University of Houston, University of Illinois, University of Massachusetts Boston, University of Massachusetts Lowell, University of Pittsburgh, Virginia Tech University and Wayne State University.
Institutions earning the Innovation and Economic Prosperity designation have the opportunity to work with APLU’s Commission on Innovation, Competitiveness and Economic Prosperity to identify both accomplishments and areas for growth and improvement.
APLU is a research, policy and advocacy organization representing 234 public research universities, land-grant institutions, state university systems and affiliated organizations.
