Livestock, forage, grain forum to focus on trends and future

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University faculty and Extension staff will contribute to discussions of global food trends, risk management and drought recovery during this year's Indiana Livestock, Forage and Grain Forum.

The forum will be from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 11 at the JW Marriott Hotel, 10 S. West St., Indianapolis.

There will be discussions on the effects of global events on the food and agriculture industries as well as on individual farms and businesses.

Speakers from Purdue will present breakout sessions on several topics in the afternoon. They are:

* Keith Johnson and Elysia Rodgers, Purdue Extension: "Forages on the Farm: The Old, the New and Improved Ones, Too."

* Bob Nielsen, Shaun Casteel and Greg Bossaer, Purdue Extension: "Moving Forward from the 2012 Drought."

* Candace Croney, Department of Animal Science - "U.S. Dairy Welfare Issues: What You Need to be Aware Of."

Following the breakout sessions, Michael Boehlje, Brent Gloy and Elizabeth Yeager of Purdue's Center for Commercial Agriculture will partner with Tom Scott of Informa Economics to present "Farming in the New Normal: Managing Risk for the Long Haul."

Morning sessions will focus on analysis of worldwide economic, weather and food trends, featuring David Hughes, emeritus professor of food marketing at Imperial College in London; Tyler Cowen, Holbert L. Harris Professor of Economics at George Mason University and general director of the Mercatus Center; and Evelyn Browning-Garriss, known as the "Weather Whisperer" for her work in research and predictions based on historical weather trends.
