Don't Miss It!

It's a fall break sandwich. Classes won't meet Oct. 13-14, but campus entertainment and culture will be swinging before and after that. The lively experience of "Mamma Mia!" is heading this way from ABBA-land, but there's a plentitude of stimulating speakers and homegrown performers scheduled soon. Don't Miss It! recommends this fest of October.

OCTOBER 8

Presidential Lecture Series. Speaker Paul Eremenko, head of Google's Project Ara, will talk on "Models of Innovation" and discuss it further with President Mitch Daniels. 6:30 p.m. STEW, Loeb Playhouse. Details

TEDGlobal 2014 viewing party. This is a chance to hear remotely from some remarkable thinkers while sitting alongside some people here in TEDxPurdueU who might be a little interesting themselves. 7 p.m. Mechanical Engineering Building, Gatewood Wing, Room 1130. Details

It's a dual sports duel, and it's two kinds of football.
* Football takes on Michigan State on Hammer Down Cancer Day at 3:30 p.m. $. Football

The world-famous concert pair of Yo-Yo Ma on cello with Kathryn Stott on piano come to Purdue. This is a rescheduled performance and is sold out. 7:30 p.m. STEW, Loeb Playhouse. $. Details

OCTOBER 17-18

Volleyball hosts perennial national contender Penn State at 8 p.m. Friday and the tough Ohio State Buckeyes at 7 p.m. Saturday. $. Details

Swimming and diving gets underway with Miami (Ohio) at 6 p.m. Friday and the Indiana Intercollegiates at noon Saturday. Free. Boilermaker Aquatic Center. Athletics

Melissa Aldana & Crash Trio. Jazz has traveled well. Saxophonist Melissa Aldana is steeped in Chile's energized jazz tradition, which she will bring with bass and drums behind her. OCTOBER 17-19

Bands & Orchestras plans an intriguing weekend. You can swing free to "A Tribute to Glenn Miller and the 'Modernaires'" at 8 p.m. Friday, then pirouette over to an orchestral collaboration with the Lafayette Ballet Company in "The Lark Ascending" at 8 p.m. Saturday or 4 p.m. Sunday (tickets needed but free). Nick Offerman, comedian, on Full Bush Tour with comedian Ahmed Bharooka. Offerman, an acting veteran, currently has facial hair for his role as Ron Swanson on "Parks and Recreation," but don't fear this beard. 8 p.m. Elliott Hall of Music. $. Details

Purdue Contemporary Dance Company will present student-choreographed works in four performances, 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. nightly. $. Details

OCTOBER 24 and 26

From honoring a jazz legend for the ages to celebrating Halloween with all ages, Purdue Bands & Orchestras can cover the range. The Purdue Jazz Band will explore "The Music of Oliver Nelson" at 8 p.m. Friday in STEW, Loeb Playhouse. The Purdue Wind Ensemble will host the family favorite "Creepy Classics" -- costumes encouraged, and a parade and treats await -- at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Long Center. Free. Details

Mara Liasson of National Public Radio presents a Presidential Lecture Series talk, also discussing the issues with President Mitch Daniels. 6:30 p.m. STEW, Loeb Playhouse. Details
