TEDxPurdueU hosts viewing party of TEDGlobal2014

September 22, 2014

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – TEDxPurdueU, Purdue's independently organized TED conference, on Oct. 9 will host a viewing party of the TEDGlobal 2014 conference.

The event, free and open to the public, begins at 7 p.m. in the Roger B. Gatewood Wing (Room 1130) of the School of Mechanical Engineering building.

At TEDGlobal, in Rio de Janeiro, viewers will witness the innovation, dynamism and creativity taking place in South America and the global "South." The livestream features six speakers who include authors, global policymakers, activists, and entrepreneurs.

"We're celebrating the start of an exciting season with the Purdue community, and look forward to showing our gratitude for their continued support by providing exclusive TED content in an intellectually-stimulating environment," said Aaron Chandran, 2015 executive director of TEDxPurdueU.

Following the streaming, there will be a reception for attendees in the Hollander Atrium of the Mechanical Engineering Building.

About TED

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to "ideas worth spreading." Starting as a four-day conference in California 25 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. The annual TED Conference invites the world's leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes. Their talks are then made available free, at http://new.ted.com/. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Al Gore, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The conference takes place each spring in Long Beach, Calif., along with the TEDActive simulcast in Palm Springs, Calif. The annual TEDGlobal conference is held each summer in Edinburgh, Scotland.

TED's media initiatives include http://new.ted.com/, where new TEDTalks are posted daily; the recently launched TED-Ed platform for students and educators; the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as the ability for any TEDTalk to be translated by volunteers worldwide; and TEDBooks, short e-books by speakers that elaborate on a single idea originally presented on TED's stage.
